how to crochet a ribbed cardigan and babydoll top (any size!) | DIY winter outfit
Hi everyone! Whether you want to crochet a cozy ribbed cardigan (inspired by Hope Macaulay's gorgeous colossal knits) or dreamy babydoll top, you're in the right place :) Please watch the YouTube tutorial for video demonstrations and keep in mind that this is a 100% customizable and made-to-measure pattern. This means that you can make the top and cardigan ANY size. I've mentioned the measurements of my projects, but please only use that for reference and don't blindly follow them. Remember, the goal is to make the perfect fit for YOU!
My cardigan's measurements:
Back panel - 28 inches wide and 22 inches long
Front panels - 12 inches wide and 22 inches long
Sleeves - 9 inches wide (folded in half) and 18 inches long
My top's measurements:
Bodice - 6.5 inches long and 11.5 inches wide (folded in half) / 23 inches wrapped around my chest
Ruffles - 7.5 inches long
Straps - 10.5 inches long (19 chains)
Abbreviations:
yoslst - yarn over slip stitch / blo - back loop only / slst - slip stitch / hdc - half double crochet / sc - single crochet / dc - double crochet
Cardigan
1. Front and back panels
Row 1
- Make a slip knot and chain the desired length
- Skip the 1st chain then yoslst blo in every chain (leave 5-10 chains at the end for the ribbing)
- To make the ribbing, sc blo in the last 5-10 chains
Row 2
- Chain 1 and turn your work
- Slst blo in the first 5-10 chains (it has to be the same number every time!!) to make the ribbing
- Yoslst blo in the rest of the stitches
Row 3
- Chain 1 and turn your work
- Yoslst blo in every stitch until you reach the bottom ribbing
- Sc blo in the stitches for the ribbing
Repeat rows 2 and 3 until you reach the desired width! Follow these steps to make the back panel (wider than your shoulders for an oversized fit) and 2 identical front panels.
2. Sleeves
Row 1
- Make a slip knot and chain the desired length
- Skip the 1st chain then yoslst blo in every chain (leave 5-10 chains at the end for the ribbing)
- To make the ribbing, slst blo in the last 5-10 chains
Row 2
- Chain 1 and turn your work
- Slst blo in the first 5-10 chains (it has to be the same number every time!!) to make the ribbing
- Yoslst blo in the rest of the stitches
Row 3
- Chain 1 and turn your work
- Yoslst blo in every stitch until you reach the bottom ribbing
- Slst blo in the stitches for the ribbing
Repeat rows 2 and 3 until you reach the desired width! Fold the sleeves then slst the edges together.

Babydoll Top
1. Bodice
Row 1
- Make a slip knot and chain the desired width (the measurement that wraps around your chest)
- Skip the 1st chain then slst in every chain
Row 2
- Chain 1 and turn your work
- Slst blo in every chain
Crochet rows of slst blo until you reach the desired length for the bodice (from the top to bottom of your chest)
2. Stretchy panel
- Slst along the side edge of the bodice
- Chain 1 and turn your work then slst blo in every stitch
- Crochet rows of slst blo until this panel is around 2-4 inches wide
- Slst the panel to the other edge of the bodice
3. Ruffles
- Round 1: chain 2 to start then hdc along the bottom edge of the bodice
- Slst in the 2nd chain to end this round
- Round 2: chain 2 to start, repeat this pattern all around *1 dc, 2 dc*
- Slst in the 1st stitch to end the round
Round 3 onwards: chain 2 to start, insert 1 dc in every stitch, slst in the 1st stitch to end the round
Crochet rounds of 1 dc in every stitch until you reach the desired length for the top!
