how to crochet a tie-front mesh top/cardigan of ANY size! | step-by-step tutorial + measurement guide
Hi everyone! This is a guide you can use for reference when figuring out the measurements for your mesh top/cardigan. The video tutorial includes demonstrations that you can follow step-by-step, and you can also follow along with the written pattern available on the My Row Counter app.
To make crocheting this mesh top (and other projects!) easier, I recommend downloading the My Row Counter app. I love using the counter to keep track of my rows and the highlighter tool to easily find the steps I'm working on. They also have handy tools such as a built-in glossary, yarn ball converter, length and wool weight converter, and a stitch and motive library. Download the must-have My Row Counter App for crocheters & knitters!
Reminder that the following measurements are for the top I made! You can make yours any size and don't have to do the same stitch counts, rows, and measurements as me.
1. Back panel
Width: 15 inches / Length: 13-14 inches (a bit stretched)
- I started with 57 chains
- Each row consisted of 19 mesh stitches
- I did a total of 34 rows
2. Shoulder section
Width: 4 inches / Length: around 4.5 inches
- Each row consisted of 5 mesh stitches
- I did a total of 9 rows
3. Front panel
Length: same as back panel
- I did a total of 34 rows by following the pattern below (the last 2 rows are the front ties)
Row 1: 1 increase, chain 5 then sc in every chsp (total 6 mesh stitches)
Row 2 to 6: no increases, chain 5 then sc in every chsp (total 6 mesh stitches)
Row 7: 1 increase, chain 5 then sc in every chsp (total 7 mesh stitches)
Row 8 to 12: no increases, chain 5 then sc in every chsp (total 7 mesh stitches)
Row 13: 1 increase, chain 5 then sc in every chsp (total 8 mesh stitches)
Row 14 to 18: no increases, chain 5 then sc in every chsp (total 8 mesh stitches)
Row 19: 1 increase, chain 5 then sc in every chsp (total 9 mesh stitches)
Row 20 to 24: no increases, chain 5 then sc in every chsp (total 9 mesh stitches)
Row 25: 1 increase, chain 5 then sc in every chsp (total 10 mesh stitches)
Row 26 to 32: no increases, chain 5 then sc in every chsp (total 10 mesh stitches)
Row 33: chain 135, sc in the 9th chain from the hook, repeat *chain 5, skip 2 chains, sc in the 3rd chain* until you reach the front panel, chain 5 then sc in every chsp
Row 34: chain 5 then sc in every chsp including the front ties
4. Sleeves
Sew the front and back panel together to join the sides (leave space open at the top for the armhole!)
Width: around 6 inches / Length: 5 inches
- Each round consisted of 14 mesh stitches
- I did a total of 9 rounds
with love as always,
Mahum
