how to crochet a mesh tote bag (ANY size!) | beginner-friendly tutorial + free pattern

Hi everyone :) Here's the written pattern I followed for my mesh tote bag (perfect for spring and summer!). Please watch the video demonstrations on how to crochet the base of the bag, switch colors, and the difference between rounds of dc and rounds of mesh. You can customise the pattern in ANY way you like by adding or removing rounds or color switches. Happy crocheting!

Yarn from *lilthings* (discount code: MAHUM10) + 4 mm hook

Abbreviations:

ss - slip stitch / dc - double crochet / sc - single crochet / chsp - chain space

W - white / G - green / Y - yellow

Measurements of my bag:

Width - 12 inches

Length - 9.5 inches

Strap length - 20 inches

1. Bag base (please watch the tutorial first)

- make a slip knot, then chain the desired width (I did 44 chains)

- skip 2 chains, then insert 1 dc in every chain (place a stitch marker in the 1st dc)

- insert 3 dc in the last chain (place a stitch marker in the 1st and 3rd dc)

- insert 1 dc in the bottom loops of every chain (making the 1st round)

- insert 2 dc in the last chain (place a stitch marker in the 1st dc)

- ss into the 1st dc to end the round

- chain 3 to start a new round, then insert 1 dc in every stitch (3 dc in the stitches with the stitch markers)

- 2 rounds of the base (W)

2. Body of the bag

Alternate between crocheting rounds of dc and rounds of mesh (dc + chain 1)

Note: chain 3 to start a new round / ss in the 3rd chain to end the round

Abbreviations (yarn colors I used):

W - white / G - green / Y - yellow

W - 2 rounds of base, 1 round of dc

G - 1 round of dc, 3 rounds of mesh

Y - 1 round of mesh, 1 round of dc, 1 round of mesh

W - 1 round of dc

Y - 1 round of mesh

G - 3 rounds of mesh, 1 round of dc

Y - 1 round of dc

W - 1 round of dc, 1 round of mesh

G - 1 round of mesh

W - 1 round of mesh, 1 round of dc

Fasten off

3. Straps

- place a stitch marker on both ends to mark the beginning and end of your strap

- attach the yarn with a knot in the 3rd stitch from the marker, then chain the desired length for the strap (I did 77)

- ss into the 3rd stitch from the marker on the other side, ss into the next stitch and turn your work

- insert 1 sc into every chain

- ss into the next 2 stitches and turn your work

- insert 1 sc into every stitch

- ss into the next 2 stitches, then fasten off

- repeat on the other side to make 2 straps
