how to crochet a cute tie-front top | step-by-step tutorial + free pattern
Hi everyone! If you're looking for a cute top to wear as a cover-up for spring and summer, you've found it :)
This top is entirely made-to-measure and can be customised to create your perfect fit. Please make sure to watch the video demonstrations to get a clear visual of how to crochet this project. I hope you love your top!
Abbreviations:
ss - slip stitch / sc - single crochet / dc - double crochet / increase - 2 dc/sc stitches in the same stitch
My top's measurements (can fit XS-S, it's slightly oversized)
Width - 18 / length - 20 / armhole - 8 / bow ties - 60
1. Back panel
Foundation sc until you have the desired width
Alternate rows of dc and sc until you have the desired length
2. Shoulder section
Note: start the 1st section directly after ending the back panel, then attach the yarn on the other corner to do the 2nd section
Determine the desired width for the top of the front panel (mine is 16 stitches wide)
Crochet 4 to 6 rows of alternating sc and dc
3. Front panel
Divide the total number of stitches in the back panel by 2 (example: 64 divided by 2 is 32), this is the total number of stitches at the bottom half of the front panels
Create a pattern to increase from 16 to 32 stitches by the middle row (or slightly above it, like row 22 for my top)
This is the pattern I used from row 1 to row 22:
*1 row without an increase, then 3 rows with an increase*
Row 1 - no increase (16 stitches)
Row 2 to 4 - 1 increase near the inside edge
Row 5 - no increase
Row 6 to 8 - 1 increase near the inside edge
Row 9 - no increase
Row 10 to 12 - 1 increase near the inside edge
Row 13 - no increase
Row 14 to 16 - 1 increase near the inside edge
Row 17 - no increase
Row 18 to 20 - 1 increase near the inside edge
Row 21 - no increase
Row 22 - 1 increase near the inside edge (32 stitches)
Row 23 to 48 - no increases (32 stitches)
4. Joining
Slip stitch the front and back panel together, leaving a space at the top for the armhole (insert your hook as close to the edge as possible)
5. Sleeves
Crochet rounds around the armhole until the sleeves are the desired length (insert your hook as close to the edge as possible)
Round 1 - 7 sc, 1 hdc, 45 dc, 1 hdc, 8 sc
Round 2 - 7 sc, 1 hdc, repeat *2 dc, increase*, 1 hdc, 8 sc
Round 3 to 5 - 7 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc in every stitch, 1 hdc, 8 sc
To make new rounds - slip stitch into the 1st stitch, chain 1, and turn your work
6. Ties (x2)
Foundation sc until you have the desired length (mine is around 60 inches, 250 stitches)
7. Bows
Thread the ties around the top (skipping 2 dc each time)
Tie them into a bow :)
