beginner's guide to filet crochet | 3 easy methods for creating with pixel grids!

Hi everyone! I've fallen in love with filet crochet recently and have spent the past few months experimenting with different methods and techniques I found online. 

The good news: it's very easy once you understand how to follow a grid and what stitches to use. 

The bad news: you're going to need a lot of patience and be willing to experiment till you find what works best for you. Because, unlike popular belief, I think everyone's crochet style and personal tension will have an effect on their filet crochet pieces. So yes, everyone can do it, but what might work for one person might not be the right fit for you.

That's why I've put together this 30-minute guide on my youtube channel, which you can crochet along to and learn 3 of my favourite methods! Once you've explored the visual demonstrations with my tutorial, you can use this written guide as a reference for any steps you might forget. Happy crocheting everyone - you've got this!

Notes:

dc - double crochet / follow the grid like you would in *snakes and ladders* - don't forget to alternate sides!

1. Chain 1 method

Calculate the number of chains you need to start - number of boxes in the grid x 2 (example: 11 boxes in a row x 2 = 22 chains)

To start the 1st row - chain 3 (turning chains), then insert 1 dc into the 4th chain from your hook (this will make the 1st empty box) 

Empty boxes - chain 1 + 1 dc

Filled boxes - 2 dc (regular or linked)

There's 2 ways to start a new row - chain 1, turn your work, insert 1 dc into the 1st stitch OR chain 4, turn your work, insert 1 dc into the next stitch

2. Chain 2 method

Calculate the number of chains you need to start - [number of boxes in the grid x 3 ] + 1 (example: 11 boxes in a row x 3 = 33 + 1 = 34 chains)

To start the 1st row - chain 5 (turning chains), then insert 1 dc into the 9th chain from your hook (this will make the 1st empty box) 

Empty boxes - chain 2 + 1 dc

Filled boxes - 3 dc (regular or linked)

To start a new row - chain 5, turn your work, insert 1 dc into the next stitch

Hi everyone! This is the written pattern for my YouTube tutorial . Please refer to the video for demonstrations if you're confused. This is a very repetitive pattern, so follow the same steps shown to crochet all the rounds. Once you're done, you can add some ribbons & bows to make your bunny look even cuter - happy crocheting! Hi everyone! Here's the written pattern for rounds 1-12 of my heart cushion cover. You can find the demonstration/steps for rounds 1-5 and  how to read this pattern and make the stitches in my youtube tutorial . Abbreviations: ch - chain / sc - single crochet / hdc - half double crochet / dc - double crochet / ss - slip stitch Please note that  the steps on ending each round and attaching a new color to your work  (ss + ch 1)  are explained with demonstrations in my youtube tutorial.
