how to crochet a heart mesh sweater (any size!) | free pattern + in-depth video tutorial
Hi everyone! Quick reminder before you start crocheting -> this is a 100% made-to-measure pattern, so you can adjust the size and fit to your liking. Please only use the measurements of my sweater as a reference guide and customise to your own desired measurements when necessary! Here's the video tutorial for demonstrations and more step-by-step explanations.
My Sweater's Measurements (oversized fit - it can comfortably fit size S/M):
Front and back panel - 17.5 inches wide and 15.5 inches long (33 mesh stitches, 32 rows)
Sleeves - 8 inches wide (this is the length of the armhole too) and 17 inches long (34 mesh stitches, 30 rows)
My Heart Pixel Grid: open on Pinterest!
Abbreviations:
dc - double crochet / mesh stitch - chain 2 + 1 dc
Step 1: measure the desired width and length for the front and back panel
Step 2: crochet the back panel
- Make a slip knot then chain until you reach the desired width
- The total number of chains should be a multiple of 3 (I chained 99)
- Chain 5 more (so that's 99 + 5 for me)
- Insert 1 dc into the 8th chain from your hook (this is your 1st mesh stitch)
- Repeat this pattern to complete the 1st row *chain 2, skip 2 chains, dc into the 3rd*
- Repeat the following steps to crochet rows of mesh stitches until you have the desired length for the panel...
- Chain 5 and turn your work to start a new row then dc into the 1st loop
- *Chain 2 then dc into the next loop* until the end of the row to crochet mesh stitches
- Once the panel is as long as you want, fasten off then weave in the ends
Step 3: create a heart pixel grid
- Go to friendship-bracelets.net, click on ALPHA to generate a pixel grid from scratch
- Adjust the width and height on the generator then use the pixel/fill mode to draw a heart in the center of the grid
- Width = number of mesh stitches in each row (for me that's 33 stitches in each row)
- Height = number of rows in the back panel (for me that's 32 rows)
Step 4: crochet the front panel following the pixel grid (please watch the video tutorial for the demonstrations on how to switch colors)
- 1 box in the pixel grid = 1 mesh stitch / 1 row in the pixel grid = 1 row in the front panel
- Start crocheting the rows from the bottom of the pixel grid
Step 5: shoulder section
- After finishing all the rows for the front panel, crochet 4-6 more rows on the top sides to create space for the shoulders. This section also creates the neckhole so make it as wide as you want. I wanted a really loose off-shoulder sweater, so I made each row 5 stitches wide but if you want a more closed neckline, make this section wider!
Step 6: sewing the panels together
- Sew the top of the shoulder section to each side of the back panel
- Sew the front and back panels together from the bottom while leaving space for the armhole at the top (leave the top part empty NOT JOINED to crochet the sleeves!)
Step 7: sleeves (repeat on both sides)
- Attach your yarn with a knot at the bottom of the armhole
- Chain 5 then dc into the to start the 1st row
- Repeat all around *chain 2, dc into the next loop*
- ss into the chain 5 space to end the round
- Repeat the following steps to crochet rounds of mesh stitches until you have the desired length for the sleeve...
- Chain 5 and turn your work to start a new round then dc into the 1st loop
- *Chain 2 then dc into the next loop* until the end of the row to crochet mesh stitches (don't dc into the last loop!)
- Once the sleeve is as long as you want, fasten off then weave in the ends
for the people who's using the tut (like me :D) make sure to watch the video because when i read this it makes no sense but when you watch the video with the pattern then you'll understand (no hate!)
