how to crochet the everyday cardigan | easy short-sleeve cardigan tutorial and free pattern!
Hi everyone! I'm back to crocheting my dream wardrobe, starting with this short-sleeve cardigan that's the perfect piece to help us transition from summer to fall.
The texture made with the V-stitches is light and drapey, but still provides just the right amount of coverage to wear on slightly breezier days. If you're not sure how to style it, I love pairing it with a plain tank top or cami underneath (it's my go-to outfit combo for crochet tops!).
You can find the step-by-step tutorial on my youtube channel and a link to the yarns I used on my amazon storefront. Please keep in mind that the amount of yarn you need for this project will depend on the size you're making! You can refer to the measurements of my cardigan below and use them as a guide to make any size adjustments. The goal is to use this pattern to crochet your perfect fit!
Measurements of my cardigan:
Back panel - 14.5 inches wide and around 15 inches long
Front panel - around 7.2 inches wide at the bottom and 3.5 inches wide at the top shoulder section / same length as the back panel + an extra 3-4 inches for the shoulder section
Armhole - 7.5 inches wide (24 V-stitches in every round around the armhole)
Sleeves - 3 inches long (made with 7 rounds + 1 round of shell border)
Write down these measurements before you start crocheting your cardigan:
• Desired length and width of the back panel
After crocheting the back panel…
• The desired length where you want the front panel to start sloping or curving in (for example: 10 inches from the bottom of the cardigan)
• The desired width for the armhole and length for the sleeves
Step 1: Back panel
• Make a slip knot and chain until you have the desired width. The total number of chains should be in multiples of 3 + 1 (for example: 12 is a multiple of 3, 12 + 1 = 13)
• Follow the diagram below to crochet rows of V-stitches until you reach the desired length for the back panel, then fasten off
Step 2: Front panel (make 2 identical pieces)
• Half the number of stitches you crocheted for the back panel (round up or down to make sure that the total number of starting chains is still a multiple of 3 + 1)
• Follow the diagram above to crochet rows of V-stitches until you reach the length where you want the front panel to start curving/sloping inwards
• Follow the diagram below to crochet the curved edge (one edge remains straight, so only decrease V-stitches on one side while ending rows regularly on the other side)

Step 3: Sleeve
• Sew the sides of the front and back panels together, leaving a space for the armhole
• Attach the yarn with a knot at the bottom of the armhole, chain 3 to start, then crochet V-stitches all around
• End the round with a slip stitch into the 3rd chain, turn your work to start a new round, chain 3, then continue crocheting rounds of V-stitches until the sleeves are the desired length
Step 4: Shell border/scalloped edge
There are 2 options:
• Repeat [ 5 dc, slip stitch ] or [ 4 dc, slip stitch ]
The 1st option is slightly chunkier, while the 2nd option is a bit smaller!
